WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS

After June 30 2010, by law,  anyone who works with or teaches children in Victoria under the age of 18 in either a supervised or unsupervised capacity is required to hold either a current Working With Children Check (WWC) or a registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).  In this VMTA Directory listing of members, the acronyms WWC and/or VIT appear next to the names of those teachers who have one of these two checks/permissions and the acronyms indicate that these are the teachers who are legally able to teach children under the age of 18.  The names of other teachers, who only teach adults and therefore do not require the check, appear on the website also, however the letters WWC or VIT will not appear after their names.

Whilst VMTA endeavours to keep this information up to date as much as possible, the onus is on the individual member to supply a copy of either the WWC Check or VIT registration to VMTA.  It is an offence under the legislation for an agency to be reckless as to whether the worker has a current assessment notice for WWC or for VIT registration, therefore VMTA will not put the letters WWC or VIT next to a member’s listing on VMTA’s directory, unless VMTA has proof that the member has the relevant check or registration.

Any VMTA members who have a Working With Children Check or Victorian Institute of Teaching registration, but who do not yet have the appropriate acronym next to their names in this VMTA Directory listing, should forward a copy of their checks to the VMTA office as soon as possible and the acronym will be added.
